Coinbase Wallet (Base App) — Self-Custody Features, Downloads & Security
Coinbase Wallet has been rebranded as Base App. It remains a self-custody onchain wallet (your keys, your crypto) for trading, NFTs, DeFi, messaging, and multi-chain activity. Existing Coinbase Wallet installs continue to work — you do not need a separate new app download. This page is a practical reference for features, official download channels, device support, and a security checklist.
Rebrand note (official): Coinbase states “Coinbase Wallet is now Base App.” Assets from Coinbase Wallet remain accessible in Base App. Always download only from official stores linked below — never from third-party APK sites or unsolicited “support” links.
Base App vs Coinbase Exchange App
| Topic | Base App (Coinbase Wallet) | Coinbase App (exchange) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | Self-custody wallet, onchain apps, swaps, social/mini-apps | Buy, sell, and trade via Coinbase brokerage/exchange |
| Key custody | You control keys (self-custody / smart-wallet options) | Custodial account balances held by Coinbase |
| dApps / DeFi | Built for wallet connect, browser extension, onchain exploration | Limited onchain; focused on exchange products |
| Linking | Can connect to a Coinbase account for transfers and some rewards | Can send/receive to linked Base App wallet |
| Recovery model | Recovery phrase, passkey, cloud backup, and/or email–Google–Apple sign-in + MFA (product-dependent) | Account login + Coinbase account recovery flows |
Key Features
- Self-custody onchain wallet — Control crypto, NFTs, and DeFi positions on-device rather than leaving assets only on the exchange.
- Multi-chain trading — Trade tokens across Base, Ethereum, Solana, and additional supported networks from one app (availability can vary by asset/region).
- Verified token browsing — Store listings highlight 450+ verified tokens with a verified badge to reduce lookalike-token risk (always double-check contract/network).
- Fiat on-ramps — Fund with Apple Pay, bank account, local payment methods, or debit/credit cards where available (no guarantee every method works in every country).
- USDC rewards (limited rollout) — Marketing rate “up to 3.35% APY” on USDC holdings is variable, discretionary, shown in-app for eligible users. Store copy: rolling out in the U.S.; unavailable in the EU or Canada; U.S. users must link a Coinbase account to earn.
- DeFi access — Stake, lend, or borrow via connected decentralized apps (smart-contract and liquidation risk apply; returns not guaranteed).
- Encrypted chat + USDC in messages — DMs/group chats; send USDC in-chat. Coinbase states fee sponsorship up to $0.30 per USDC send on Base, $2 monthly max per user (promo terms can change).
- AI agent chat — Optional agents (e.g. Bankr, Flaunch per store copy) for trade/send/portfolio actions — treat as high-risk automation; confirm every transaction.
- Smart Wallet capabilities — Coinbase describes Smart Wallet features such as automated transaction management, fee optimization, and enhanced security vs a basic EOA; passkeys and import of existing smart wallets are supported in current app messaging.
- Browser extension (EOA) — Coinbase Wallet Extension for Chrome Web Store use with dApps on desktop; mobile Base App covers iOS/Android.
- Global packaging — Listed as available in 20 languages and 170+ countries (feature and rewards eligibility still region-gated).

Download & Security Checklist
Self-custody means lost keys or leaked phrases usually mean permanent loss. Work the list in order; click a row to mark it done.
- Use official stores only — App Store id
1278383455, Play packageorg.toshi, or the Chrome Web Store link from Coinbase’s download page. Avoid APK mirrors and Telegram “support” binaries. - Verify publisher — Developer should read Coinbase Wallet / Coinbase. Mismatched publisher + Base/Coinbase branding is a red flag.
- Never share a recovery phrase or passkey — Coinbase/Base staff will not DM you asking for 12/24 words. Anyone who does is a scammer.
- Back up recovery materials offline — If you use a seed phrase, write it on paper/metal and store offline. Prefer passkey + encrypted cloud backup only through in-app flows you initiated.
- Enable MFA / biometrics — Turn on device biometrics and any multi-factor options offered after email/Google/Apple sign-in.
- Test recovery before funding large amounts — On a secondary device or after reinstall, confirm you can restore access with your chosen method.
- Separate exchange vs wallet risk — Linking a Coinbase account helps transfers/rewards; it does not make onchain approvals safe. Review every spend/permit signature.
- Treat airdrop/dApp links as hostile by default — Use verified tokens, bookmark known frontends, and revoke stale token approvals periodically.
- USDC rewards hygiene — Confirm eligibility in-app; EU/Canada store disclaimer says rewards unavailable there. Rate is variable (marketed up to 3.35% APY) and can change.
- Extension hygiene — Pin the official extension, lock it when idle, and never enter your phrase on random “sync/validation” websites.
Quick Start (High Level)
- Install Base App from the App Store or Google Play, or open the official web/extension path from Coinbase’s download hub.
- Create a new wallet or restore with recovery phrase / passkey / supported social login.
- Secure the account (biometrics, MFA, offline phrase backup if applicable).
- Optional: link your Coinbase exchange account for transfers and eligible USDC rewards.
- Fund via on-ramp or deposit from another wallet — always verify network + address on a small test transfer first.
- For desktop dApps, install the Coinbase Wallet Extension from the official store link and connect only to sites you trust.
Common Pitfalls
- Confusing Base App with the Coinbase exchange app — Different custody models; withdrawing to “your Coinbase app” is not the same as holding in Base App self-custody.
- Assuming USDC APY is global or fixed — Store legal copy: variable rate, U.S. rollout, not available in EU/Canada, Coinbase account link required in the U.S.
- Downloading a second “Base” app unnecessarily — Official FAQ: existing Coinbase Wallet users do not need a new app to keep access.
- Signing blind permit/swap transactions — Smart-wallet UX can feel simpler; contract risk remains. Read spender, amount, and network.
- Seed phrase screenshots or cloud notes — Device backups and messaging apps are common theft vectors.
- Wrong-network deposits — Multi-chain support increases mis-send risk; confirm chain before large transfers.
Published Promotional Figures (Verify In-App)
| Item | Stated figure | Conditions (from store / Coinbase copy) |
|---|---|---|
| USDC rewards | Up to 3.35% APY | Variable; Coinbase discretion; shown in-app; U.S. rollout; unavailable EU/Canada; link Coinbase account (U.S.) |
| Sponsored USDC sends on Base | Up to $0.30 / tx | Max $2 sponsored fees per user per month when sending USDC on Base via Base App |
| DeFi yield / loans | App-dependent | Returns not guaranteed; collateralized loans still carry risk |
