What is the Cryptocurrency World Map?

The map visualizes search interest for different coins by country, with the data sourced from Google Trends.

Google Trends normalizes search data to facilitate comparisons between terms. Consequently, a percentage of 60% for Bitcoin and 15% for Ethereum means that the search volume for “Bitcoin” is four times higher than that of “Ethereum”.

You can click on the coins at the top of the map to select them. You can then compare them.

Key Takeaways (2021)

  • The Bitcoin “Search Dominance” fell in 2021 from 80% to 60% but it is still the most searched Cryptocurrency in all countries.
  • While “Ethereum” is the number 2 worldwide, in the US “Dogecoin” had almost twice as much search volume as “Ethereum”.
  • In comparison to 2020, no longer in the Top 10 are “Bitcoin Cash”, “Monero” and “IOTA”
  • It looks like South America leans more towards Bitcoin while the East is more open to Altcoins
  • In El Salvador 98% of the search volume was about Bitcoin.

Key Takeaways (2020)

  • Bitcoin is by far the most searched coin in all countries. This comes as no surprise.
  • The market cap ranking does not mirror the search volume ranking. Dogecoin is not in the Top 30 by market cap, for instance. Yet it is placed in the Top 10 of most searched cryptocurrencies.
  • South America appears to be the most “Bitcoin Maximalist” continent, with 4 countries making the Top 10.
  • Asia seems to be most open to other cryptocurrencies. (Or maybe they are just confirming the gambling stereotype 😉 ).
  • Germany stands out as the only country in the world with more interest in IOTA than in Ethereum.

Why are some coins missing?

Search interest for “Terra”, “Shiba Inu” or “Polygon” is ambiguous because people also search for those terms in different contexts. “Tron” might be overrepresentated in the data because of the movie Tron and the Audi e-tron

Also missing are coins with insufficient search volume (<1%) in comparison with Bitcoin.

Why are some countries missing?

Google Trends does not provide data for all countries
